The program is based out of colonial Cuenca, Ecuador's third largest city with over 300,000 inhabitants settled into the valley of the high Andes. The deep history of its people, the current mix of cultures, and the efforts to preserve its culture while entering into the 21st Century make Cuenca a fascinating place to live. The lessons learned by strolling the cobblestone streets are often some of the most valuable of the entire program.
Also known as the “Athens of Ecuador,” Cuenca has much to offer to art and music enthusiasts; galleries are scattered around the city and live music and free concerts can be found on the weekends. Those who love the outdoors can take day trips to the close by waterfalls of Girón and the páramo of Cajas National Park. For a day off in the city, strolling down the narrow colonial streets will always offer surprises just around the corner.
In addition to its history and charm, Cuenca offers all of the conveniences of a modern city. There are several internet cafés in the downtown area where students can call home for just a few cents a minute, shopping malls, grocery stores, and movie theaters.
