Arrival
The first week in Ecuador students travel through the spectacular Avenue of the Volcanoes. The program begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador and the first city in the world to be named an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although in many respects a modern city, Quito has retained much of its colonial charm. The second day we pass through the Mitad del Mundo monument where students can stradle both hemispheres and then head to the town of Otavalo, about 2 hours north of Quito, and famous for the large indigenous artesan market. In and around Otavalo, we'll see how goods, such as weavings and Andean instruments, are made and talk about the cause and effect of the artisans' skill. We then travel South to the indigenous community of Salasaca and spend the night in a striking hacienda with views of the Tunguragua Volcano. From there we travel South until we reach Cuenca, where the students meet their new host families with whom they will live for the following months.

Field Trips
During the program in Cuenca, students have the opportunity to explore the surrounding
area on weekend fieldtrips. Points of interest include the Cañari and Inca ruins at Inga Pirca, the páramo at Cajas National Park, and the women´s weaving cooperative in the rural community of Principal. All trips are considered learning opportunities and the students are therefore accompanied by CEDEI staff, teachers and local guides, ensuring the students will get the most out of each trip while staying safe.

At the end of the program, TEFL students head to Ecuador´s Pacific coast, where they have four days to relax and soak up the equatorial sun. They are based out of the charming fishing town Puerto Lopez, where they can take excursions on boat to whale watch or to hike around Blue-footed Boobies on Isla de la Plata.
