After-Program Options

Field Experience and Medical Placements:

Participants with an advanced proficiency in Spanish also have the opportunity to volunteer as part of a two-week field experience in a hospital or clinic, or shadowing a local health professional. Potential placements include working in a health center, a public academic teaching hospital, a foundation that assists pregnant women and cares for disabled children, or with a local foundation that does mobile surgery in rural areas outside of Cuenca. There is also the option of completing a full rotation in a local health center. If you would like to pursue this option, please contact the International Programs staff directly.

The optional field experience includes room and board, 35 hours of Spanish classes, and help in selecting a suitable placement. Additional options may be explored with the International Programs staff in Cuenca. In order to ensure the maximum benefit to both student and host, the field experience option is available only for students with an advanced level of Spanish.

Travel Options:

Another option for those wishing to extend their stay would be to take one of our after-program travel options to either the Galapagos Islands or the Ecuadorian Amazon Jungle. Both of these trips are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that should not be missed during a trip to Ecuador.
