About the Program

Classes

Students attend classes Monday through Friday mornings for four hours each day. Attendance is strictly required.

Program enrollment is limited to 40 students and classes average about 10 students. Since space is limited, it is very important to apply early.

In addition to coursework, students are encouraged to participate in cultural and social activities in the community and to take advantage of the extracurricular afternoon instruction in the Andean language, dance, music and cooking.

Field Trips

The Intersession Program includes several field trips. Students visit the Inca fortress at Ingapirca, El Cajas National Park and Patate, Quito and Otavalo (subject to change).

Housing

During their stay in Cuenca, students live with an Ecuadorian family, speaking Spanish and experiencing the hospitality of Latin American culture firsthand. This group of families has been housing students since 1985, and has been central to the program's success. Most students keep in touch with their Ecuadorian families throughout the years, and many return to visit.
