Spring Semester in the Andes

Live and study in Ecuador. Visit the Amazon Jungle. Explore the heights of Peru.

15 January - 8 May 2008

The classes during the Semester in the Andes program are designed to keep students on track with their majors, while taking advantage of the fantastic teaching opportunities that come with studying in such a unique place. To do this, the program offers a broad range of courses, all taught within the context of life in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and Peru. However, the academic experience isn't limited to just a classroom experience; the program also offers a considerable amount of travel to reinforce what is learned and to allow students a chance to see an incredible region up close and with all its beauty, warmth, history, and problems as no text book could ever hope to offer.

Study in Cuenca, Ecuador, one of the world's most beautiful cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Nancy's Class

Classes are small to give students a chance to interact with the teachers, and they often take place a long way from the classroom.

Stu's Farm

Students are required to participate in a core course which is led by program director Arvella Lensing (Ph.D. University of Iowa), although several faculty take part in the weekly sessions. This class is where all aspects of the program come together in the academic sense, from classroom work to field trips to host family life.

Some of the principal classes for the 2006 Semester will be Environmental Studies in the Andes and Conservation Biology taught by David Silverberg (Ph.D. MIT, National Geographic Expedition Instructor, founder and director of the Environmental Learning Center), The Political Economy of Latin America, Latin American Short Stories, and Service Learning (volunteer work), among others. Spanish will be offered at all levels and in different areas such as grammar, conversation, and literature.

Program director Arvella Lensing (left) is always available to students, especially when they need help bargaining for crafts. Professor David Silverberg is shown here in his favorite classroom.. He has taught in over 77 countries worldwide.
