Fourteen foreign students from CEDEI’s International Programs department will participate in the 5th edition of UDAMUN from the 11th to the 14th of November.  The UDAMUN is the Universidad de Azuay’s Model United Nations which they have been organizing since 2009 and in which students from the most important universities of Ecuador and neighboring countries come to participate.

The foreign university students are part of the Fall Semester program and they have been studying in CEDEI’s International Programs department since September.  The students come from various centers of higher education in the US, Canada and France.

This is the first time that a CEDEI group of foreign students will participate in UDAMUN, which will be a very enriching experience.  It is an excellent opportunity for the students to share opinions to debate various subjects and world problems with students that have similar ages.

Before their participation in the 5th edition of UDAMUN, the Fall Semester Students assisted a training to become familiar with this event.  In this Edition of UDAMUN there will be 9 committees of the United Nations which deal with various subjects of global interest such as: environmental issues, armed conflict between nations, how to help countries that don’t have many resources, drug trafficking, the role of women in society and others.

The majority of the CEDEI foreign students will participate in a committee called UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), which will be conducted in English.  Nevertheless, three students that have a high Spanish level will participate in three different councils, the CODEHU (Human Rights Council), ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) and the Security Council which will be conducted in Spanish. The students will focus on two central principals in each of their committees where through dialog and debate they will arrive at agreements and resolution projects that will be presented to the general assembly during the final day of debates.   This is the same process that the real UN uses to come to agreements.

One of the goals of UDAMUN is to create a space where students can: debate, gain negotiation abilities, look for possible solutions to problems that arise day to day in the world, and understand how the contributions of the international community is indispensable.

It’s important to point out that the Fall Semester group is studying at CEDEI’s International Programs department to further their University studies and that they will receive credit for their classes here.   The group has also participated in a wide array of activities that include: visits to touristic places in Ecuador, lectures on various subjects, classes for their majors, dance classes, cooking classes and much more.  These activities have allowed them to become involved in our culture.
